SOUTHERN CROSS ENGINES

Windmills are graceful things from a distance. Up close, they can squeak and screech, thump and clunk a bit . .   or a lot.  I often see them as I travel around Queensland. They can also be seen far away from Queensland,  I do not know if anyone has ever

recorded how many parts of the world where they can be found, but I expect there are many scattered around the World.

Where I live It is not unusual to find the odd Southern Cross engine, or windmill remains while wandering around in the bush.  There are still a good number of  Windmills standing where they have stood for many years,  land marks.  I like them.

A good while back I  received an email regarding a Southern Cross engine, I had photos on site  That I had taken during an Engine Running Day held By the Gladstone  Vintage and Classic Car Club.   The email was from Ian Matthew's.

If I recall correctly Ian was chasing an engine number related to the photo, for the Southern Cross Register that he was putting together.  I instantly Emailed him and asked him If he wanted a web site,  (I really do like these engines),  I have been slowly working on the web site since Ian Emailed me back saying Yes. . .

Some Southern Cross  History

George Griffiths opened an ironmonger's shop at Toowoomba, Queensland In 1871. It grew to become The Toowoomba Foundry,  and manufactured a

diverse range of products including windmills
Steam engines, boilers, diesel and petrol engines, pumps of  many types, hay, chaff and wool presses, chaff cutters, and windmills amongst the list

In 1876, known then by the name Griffiths Bros. & Co. they built the first Australian Windmill. This was based on a windmill from California USA. They built this first windmill for  Jimbour Station near Dalby This was known as the 'Griffiths'.   Well  known

windmills including the   'Zephyr' and  'Eureka'  were to follow.

by 1905,  8 foot, 10 foot and 12 ft windmills. Were being manufactured

The photos of Southern Cross Images on this page can all be found on the  Southern Cross Register

Southern Cross Pump Engine No 293

(Toowoomba Foundry)   - John Probably got the 'bug' for hit and  miss engines after  & seeing them at the calliope Historical Village. The 'bug' led him to this two  inch pump unit that had spent its working life at  Terrors creek pumping  110 gallons an hour  300ft up a hill,   to the Dairy at Dayborough.

SOUTHERN CROSS  ENGINE   "Hit and Miss"    This engine was manufactured in Australia in the 1950's  It is one of the last 'Hit and Miss' models. This type of engine was mainly used for pumping  water from bores and wells.
