Road Impression of the 1958 Singer Gazelle

(Garage and Motor Trader  April 15th  1958)

Last month by courtesy of the  Queensland distributors, John McGrath Motors (Q'land) Pty. Ltd., we test drove the Singer Gazelle over a 230 moile course from Brisbane through the Darling downs and return.

In the lower horse-power bracker (52.5 b.h.p at 4,500 r.p.m.) the Gazelle is a lively performer - particularly in third gear.  For example, the car negotiated more than half the steep Toll Bar Range road to Toowoomba in and when changed to into third, cruised effortlessly over the remaining, and steepest section.

In heavy traffic, the Gazelle was found to be nippy and easily handled - steering was positive and flexible; the steeering column gear change was convenient whilst the overall glass area ldft nothing to be desired on the score of visibility.

On the open road the Singer Gazelle performed quite up to expectations - cornering at fast speed with a minimum of side sway;  acceleration through the gears to cruising speed was quick and responsive;  creuising speed or top gear performance was easily sustained; rough and corrugated road surfaces were traversed at 35 m.p.h. with a minimum of shudder;  braking even in an emergency, was smoth and efficient.

The Singer Gazelle is attractively low in body styling - the liberal glass area and planned use of chromium serve
